Trekking the Valley and Rice Fields

Follow the dirt paths directly through the active farming terraces and 8th-century subak irrigation streams.

Walking the main trails through the valley and back up takes roughly 45 to 90 minutes. You will hike down into the basin, cross the water, and climb the opposite side.

Remember to stay on the designated dirt paths. Do not step on the rice plants, as this is private land and the farmers' workplace.

The Valley Floor & Stream

15 minsMuddy terrain

This is the lowest point of the terraces. You will cross a small irrigation stream to reach the far side of the valley. The terrain gets quite muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Wear non-slip walking shoes or sturdy sandals instead of flip-flops.

The Eastern Terraces

45 minsViews of main road

The eastern side of the valley offers steeper paths and fewer tourists. Climb up this side to look back toward the main road and cliffside cafes. This quieter area provides wide views of the fields without heavy crowds.

Local Farmer Checkpoints

5 mins5k-10k IDR cash

Local farmers maintain this land and operate small resting areas along the paths. They sometimes request small cash donations to cross certain private bridges or sections. Keep 5,000 or 10,000 IDR notes handy to pay for passage and support the maintenance.
