About Tegalalang Rice Terraces

These agricultural terraces utilize the traditional Balinese subak irrigation system. Sage Rsi Markandeya introduced this communal water management method in the 8th century. The fields sit approximately 600 meters above sea level.

The site is part of a UNESCO-recognized cultural landscape system designated in 2012. Visitors explore two main zones. You enter at the Main Viewing Ridge along the road. Then, you hike down into Valley & Fields Trek.

Farmers actively maintain these fields. You will walk on dirt paths and cross irrigation streams. Read our guide on Clothing & Packing to prepare for the mud and humidity.

Krisna was a fantastic guide! This was a great way to efficiently see the highlights of Ubud without having to worry about orchestrating any of the logistics (transportation, tickets, tours). Krisna made the whole thing so easy, so we could just appreciate the beautiful sites. He was great to talk to, very knowledgeable, and an excellent photographer.

This is a great day tour to see some interesting inland sights in Bali. The monkey sanctuary was fantastic!!! Our driver and guide, Bello, was really nice and great fun! The group was five people, so a nice size. It was good to see another side of Bali.
